Severe Juvenile Gingivitis Progressing to Feline Chronic Gingivostomatitis

Patient Information

Name: Minnie
Age: 10 months old
Breed: Domestic Medium Hair (DMH)
Gender: Female, Spayed

Presenting Problem

Minnie presented with severe juvenile periodontitis, which progressed to feline chronic gingivostomatitis (FCGS). This condition caused significant oral pain, led to her being underweight, and reduced her appetite (hyporexia). As a result, Minnie became timid and frequently hid, showing clear signs of discomfort and distress.

Diagnostics and Treatment

Minnie underwent a thorough diagnostic process, including FIV/FeLV testing, biochemistry, and full-mouth radiographs. Due to the severity of her condition, we performed full-mouth extractions as a decisive initial treatment to address the inflammation and relieve her pain. This approach aimed to offer long-term relief from FCGS and enhance her overall health.

Outcome

The results were outstanding, with Minnie showing complete resolution of clinical signs and significant weight gain. Her oral inflammation fully resolved within six months, leading to a dramatic improvement in her appetite, behaviour and overall health. Minnie, who was once a timid and withdrawn kitten, became playful, happy and much more sociable.

Client Comments

“The change in both cats, but particularly Minnie, since our first appointment with Dr Bec and now is incredible. They are so playful, happy and loving, a stark contrast to the scared, timid kittens they used to be. Minnie is especially cheeky these days! They eat more now than they ever did with their teeth – Maxie is 5.5 kg and Minnie 4.8 kg!”

“We are extremely grateful to Dr Bec and the whole AAD team for their exceptional care and support throughout the process. The idea of removing all of their teeth at such a young age was daunting, but Dr Bec’s clear explanations and reassuring presence made all the difference.”

“Minnie and Maxie are now the happiest and healthiest cats, and we are so thankful to the AAD team for making this possible. We will never stop recommending Advanced Animal Dentistry.”

Veterinary Comments

“Minnie’s case was unusually severe for such a young cat.”

“Feline chronic gingivostomatitis is not typically seen at this age, but her symptoms warranted an aggressive treatment approach.”

“The full mouth extractions led to immediate improvements in her condition, particularly in appetite and behaviour.”

“Her recovery took some time, but the results have been remarkable.”

“Minnie is now healthy, playful and free of oral discomfort, a testament to the successful intervention and the dedication of her owners.”
