Frequently asked questions

What happens on the Day

How long will my pet be in hospital for?

Most procedures are day procedures, with your pet being able to return home the same day. We will keep you up to date throughout the day as to how your pet’s procedure is going and how they are recovering. Some patients with additional co-morbidities or those undergoing major surgical procedures may require an overnight hospital stay, but this will be discussed at the time of your initial consultation.

Can you do the procedure on the same day?

If you choose to do so, we can proceed with treatment the same day, as long as your pet has no other known health concerns and it is deemed suitable and safe for your pet.

Does my pet need to be fasted?

If your pet has no other health concerns, we recommend that you bring them in fasted (no food from midnight the night before). This way, we can streamline the process and perform a procedure on the same day as your consultation. Please note that there is never any pressure to proceed with treatment on the same day – the choice is yours!

Do you have a specialist anaesthetist available?

Yes! We are very lucky to have access to a Specialist Anaesthetist for high-risk patients. We always have you come in first for an initial consultation to assess the dental disease, discuss risk versus benefit and plan for a procedure from there.

What food do you recommend post-procedure?

We recommend “chunks” of cooked meat, cubed dog roll or dry food post-dental. We want to avoid soft, sticky foods such as mince, which can get stuck in extraction sites/sutures and promote wound breakdown.

Arranging An Appointment

Do I need a referral to see you?

Yes, we are a referral-based consulting practice. We recommend seeing your Primary care veterinarian for a referral. While we’ll never turn away a concerned pet owner, it’s always best to consult your veterinarian before scheduling an appointment.

Do I need an appointment if my vet has already told me what's wrong with my pet?

Yes, our Vets will always need to make their own assessments before proceeding with any dental treatment. This ensures we can thoroughly discuss treatment options with you and provide an accurate estimation of costs before proceeding.

Can I have a cost estimate prior to our appointment?

Unfortunately, we cannot give you an accurate estimate before one of our veterinarians assesses your pet in person. We can frequently provide you with a ballpark figure over the phone for specific procedures, but we cannot guarantee it will be correct until your pet is assessed.

What payment options do you have?

All our finances are processed through the hospitals we work from. All Veterinary Specialist Services (VSS) Hospitals accept Humm or Vetpay as finance options, and Brisbane Veterinary Specialist Centre (BVSC) accepts Vetpay. You can apply for finance directly through Home—VetPay or Buy now pay later with Humm in Australia, interest-free options | humm (shophumm.com) prior to your appointment.

Recovery

How will my pet eat after extractions?

Both cats and dogs eat surprisingly well after extractions. Our pets do not need their teeth to eat in a domestic environment, as we feed them food small enough for them to swallow. Their teeth are designed to cut food into bites sized chunks, they do not masticate their food like we do. We have many patients who still eat dry food even after full mouth extractions!

How long will they take to recover after a dental procedure?

Most patients are back to their normal selves by the next day. Older patients are sometimes quieter for a few days post anaesthesia and sometimes cats are a bit grumpy at their owners for a few days after the procedure.

Miscellaneous

What type of ball do you recommend for ball therapy?

We recommend a dense rubber ball, such as Kong puppy rubber balls, but it must be of an appropriate size! Please refer to our ball therapy page for more information.

Do you do implants?

No – there are ethical concerns around the placement of implants in companion animals. For this reason, we do not offer this as a service.
